If you post to more than one network, the limit that matters is the lowest one. The table below lists the caps fanout enforces for each network, so you know where a draft will be flagged before you publish.
These are the numbers fanout checks in the composer and again when a post is sent. They are the caps our product enforces, which may be stricter than what a network technically allows in some cases.
| Network | Character cap | Image cap | Needs media |
|---|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) | 280 | 4 | No |
| 3,000 | 20 | No | |
| 2,200 | 10 | Image or video | |
| TikTok | 2,200 | 4 | Video |
| YouTube | 5,000 | 4 | Video |
| Threads | 500 | 10 | No |
| Bluesky | 300 | 4 | No |
| Telegram | 4,096 | 4 | No |
| 63,206 | 10 | No | |
| 500 | 4 | Image | |
| Discord | 2,000 | 4 | No |
| 4,096 | 4 | No | |
| Snapchat | 250 | 4 | No |
| Google Business Profile | 1,500 | 4 | No |
| Slack | 40,000 | 4 | No |
Character cap is the most text a single post can contain in fanout. Image cap is the most images one post can carry; where a network has no specific entry, fanout uses 4, which is X's limit. Needs media means the network will not publish a text-only post.
The needs-media column is a hint in the composer. It warns you while editing, but the real rejection comes from the network.
X Premium subscribers can write longer posts on X itself. fanout does not use that: it holds X posts to 280 characters. If you want a long post on X, split it into a shorter version for X and keep the full text on networks with more room.
The strictest limit wins. Select X (280), Bluesky (300) and LinkedIn (3000) and the master text is held to 280 characters while all three share it.
The way out is a per-network version. Give LinkedIn its own longer text and it stops counting against the shorter networks. The same rule applies to images: the composer uses the lowest image cap among the selected networks.
A post can contain one video, and the video cannot be mixed with images.
Instagram needs an image or a video. YouTube and TikTok need a video. Pinterest needs an image. If you are posting a text-only update to a group that includes any of these, either attach media or leave that network out.
fanout counts Unicode characters, so a typical emoji counts as one. A network's own counter can treat some emoji and scripts differently, so leave a little room under the cap instead of writing to the exact number.
A link usually uses part of your budget. Check the preview if you are close to the limit. If a post is over the cap, the composer shows it before you can send, and you shorten the text or give that network its own version.
It helps to think in three groups. The short group is X (280), Snapchat (250), Bluesky (300), Threads (500) and Pinterest (500). Everything in this group wants a tight sentence or two. The mid group is Google Business (1500), Discord (2000), Instagram (2200) and TikTok (2200), which can carry a short paragraph or a full caption.
The long group starts at LinkedIn (3000) and Telegram and WhatsApp (4096 each), then YouTube (5000), and ends with Facebook (63206) and Slack (40000), where the cap is far above anything you would normally write.
In practice, write one master that fits the short group, and give the long group its own version only when the extra room is worth using. Or write the long version first and make one short version for the whole short group.
If you post to a mixed set of networks:
Networks revise their limits from time to time, and the figures in the table can fall behind. The table on this page is built from the same values the product uses, so it is updated when the product is. If a network changes a cap and you see a mismatch, tell us at support@tryfanout.com.

fanout holds X posts to 280 characters. X Premium allows longer posts on X itself, but fanout does not publish them.
300 characters per post in fanout. Threads is 500, which is more room for the same text.
Write the master draft to the strictest limit, or give the networks with more room their own longer version. fanout checks each network against its own cap before sending.
Instagram needs an image or video, YouTube and TikTok need a video, and Pinterest needs an image.
