WhatsApp limits

The count is by code points, the same as fanout uses before publishing. WhatsApp's own counter may differ slightly. Details are in the character limits guide.

Posting to WhatsApp with other networks

WhatsApp Channels let you broadcast updates to followers without a group chat, and fanout schedules those broadcasts the same way it schedules a post to any other network. Write your update, attach an image or video, and pick a time; fanout posts it to your channel automatically. WhatsApp doesn't expose a comments API or post-level analytics the way other networks do, so those aren't available yet; scheduling and media both work fully.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WhatsApp character limit?

fanout enforces 4,096 characters per WhatsApp post, counted as Unicode code points. A post can carry up to 4 images.

Do emojis count toward the WhatsApp limit?

Yes. A simple emoji is one code point, so it counts as one here. Emoji built from several parts (skin tones, flags, family emoji) are several code points and count as several. WhatsApp may weight characters differently, so leave a little room if you are close to the cap.

What happens if my WhatsApp post is too long?

fanout flags the post as too long for WhatsApp before it publishes, so nothing is cut off silently. Shorten it, or write a shorter version for WhatsApp and keep the long one for the other networks.

Is this the same count WhatsApp uses?

It is the count fanout uses when it checks a post, based on WhatsApp's documented limit as of 2026-10-25. Networks change limits and count some characters differently, so treat a post within a few characters of the cap as unconfirmed until WhatsApp accepts it.
